Collect for Good Friday
Reflection by the Reverend Ross Downes
Music for Good Friday
Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12
Psalm 22
Hebrews 10:16-25 or Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9
John 18:1 - 19:42
Christ became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and has given him the name that is above every name.
Philippians 2:8-9
Lord Jesus Christ,
crucified for us,
we kneel at the foot of your cross to watch with you.
Help us to see the cost of our forgiveness
so that we may be made new through your love;
for the glory of your holy name.
Amen.
Now it’s Good Friday and the horror of the cross looms ahead today. If you have followed my thinking during this week, you will have sensed that my approach has been one of immersion in the drama, rather that of a distant observer. You will have heard me engaging the deep and nagging emotions that accompany an awakening to the frailty of being human. Perhaps, rather than looking at the unfold drama of the week and saying “look what they did!”, you may have been moved to murmur, “look what we have done!”
