I am going to talk to you today, about Mary Magdalene and the anointing of Jesus.

It seems at first, to be a moving, but straight forward account.

  • There is an anointing, crammed with intrigue, not just in the story itself, but in the retelling within the church over the last two thousand years.
  • There is a message about money being wasted.
  • There is an allusion to future wrongdoing on the part of Judas.

All in all, tradition has brought us a mixture of images from which to choose. Closer scrutiny however, reveals another view. One, that I think, we should not overlook.

Collect of the Day

Jesus the anointed,
teach us to honour those who need our help,
and we shall give without condescension,
and receive with humility.
Hear this prayer for your love’s sake.
